Airlines with the most generous baggage allowances

September 27, 2009

Lady trying to close overstuffed suitcaseWe promised our followers on twitter last Wednesday that we'd track down which of our airlines offer the most generous baggage allowances on flights out of the UAE and here they are. Although the conversation began with Emirates and Air Arabia, the winner turned out to be Delta, which offers a whopping 64 kilograms if you combine your checked and cabin baggage allowances.

Of course, to keep things fair, we've grouped the airlines by the regions they fly to and counted the lowest free baggage allowances offered both ways on an Economy class round trip flight, without any promotional, frequent flier or equipment allowances - after all, how many of us travel with our golf clubs.

Some airlines interestingly didn't specify weight limits for their cabin baggage, so you should theoretically be able to carry a case of Lead on board, but we opted to pack a more cautious 5 kilograms.

Middle East

Wataniya 30 + 10
Etihad, Emirates 30 + 7
Air Arabia 25 + 7

Asia

Air Arabia, Emirates,
Kingfisher
30 + 7
Gulf Air 30 + 6

Europe

Emirates 30 + 7
Air France, KLM 20 + 12
Swiss 23 + 8

North America

Delta 46 + 18
Etihad, Emirates 46 + 7
United 46 + 5

All weights are indicated as published on each airline's respective website in kilograms and piece counts have been substituted with their maximum weight equivalents. If you know of a secret to sneak on an extra few kilograms that doesn't involve a pal behind the check-in counter, we'd love to hear from you.
