Qantas Airline

    Founding member the oneworld airline alliance, Qantas was established in November 1920 and commenced operations in March 1921. It began international services in May 1935. Qantas, or The Flying Kangaroo, is the third oldest airline after KLM and Avianca and is currently the largest airline by international destinations, international flights, and fleet size.

    Headquartered in Mascot, Qantas’ primary hub is at Sydney Airport, Brisbane Airport, and Melbourne Airport. Its secondary hubs are at Adelaide Airport, Dubai International Airport, and Perth Airport; focus cities include Cairns International Airport, Darwin International Airport, and Los Angeles International Airport.

    Qantas’ subsidiaries include QantasLink, Jetstar Airways- a low-cost airline operating domestically as well as internationally between Australia and New Zealand, Jetconnect, Network Aviation, Qantas Freight, and Australian Air Express.

    The fleet

    As of July 2016, Qantas operates with a fleet size of 118, excluding subsidiaries; this consists of a mix of Airbus and Boeings such as Airbus A330-200, A330-300, and A380-800 and Boeing 737-800, 747-400, and 747-400ER. It is anticipated that 8 Boeing 787-9s will replace the five Boeing 747-400 aircraft by late 2017.

    Destinations

    The entire Qantas group has flight operations to 65 domestic destinations and 27 international destinations, while Qantas flies to 20 domestic destinations, and 21 international destinations across Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and the Oceania such as Brisbane, Auckland, London, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

    Qantas has codeshare agreements with 17 other airlines, along with 8 other oneworld airline alliances; these include Airberlin, American Airlines, British Airways, Bangkok Airways, Jet Airways, Vietnam Airlines, and WestJet among other well-known airlines. 

    On-board services

    First Class suites are available exclusively on Airbus A380s and few Boeing 747-400s; enjoy the perks of priority boarding, immigration, and lounge access. The Business Class cabins are available on all Qantas aircraft. There is an additional International Business Class which is offered on selective routes and flights. The award-winning Premium Economy Class is again available only in Airbus A380 and all Boeing 747-400 aircraft offering you extra leg space, bigger seat, and a special menu. Lastly, the standard Economy Class is available on all passenger aircraft of Qantas.

    Baggage information

    Checked-in baggage allowances differ for routes, but on most routes, Economy Class passengers are allowed anywhere between 30-50 kg, Premium Economy and Business Class are allowed between 40-60 kg, and First Class is allowed between 50- 70kg, depending on your frequent flyer status. No single piece of baggage should exceed 32 kg.

    For carry-on baggage, Economy Class passengers are allowed 1 piece each of up to 7 kg and the rest of the passengers are allowed 2 pieces each, not exceeding 7 kg a piece.
