History

Aqaba is strategically located on the sea and at the crossroads between Asia and Africa. It has been home to many tribes since 4000 years ago and used to be a passage for merchants and traders between Hijaz and the Arabian Peninsula. During the 12th century, Aqaba was occupied by the Crusaders and in 1170, was regained by Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub, the Sultan of Egypt. During World War 1, Ottoman troops fled Aqaba after being attacked by Sharif Hussein bin Ali’s forces in 1917. Sharif Hussein bin Ali was known as the Hashemite Leader of the Great Arab Revolt. T. E. Lawrence, famously known as Lawrence of Arabia, also took a big part in this revolution.
