Croatia is a country of spectacular natural beauty and is undoubtedly one of the most diverse countries in Europe. It boasts a stunning array of serene islands that make for the perfect getaway. With over a thousand islands just off the coast of Croatia, they range in size from small rocks to the 20th largest island in the Mediterranean, Cres Island. The islands nearest to the mainland are connected by bridges, but don’t miss out on hopping on a ferry for an unforgettable ride within the Adriatic Sea surrounded by white cliffs and green hills. Here’s a look into the most beautiful ones to inspire your next holiday destination.

Kornati

The Kornati Islands are a series of 130 islands, reefs, and islets that offer a magnificent view of vineyards, olive trees, and fig trees against chalk limestones. The view from atop the massive cliffs is unique and truly beautiful. The Kornati Islands date back to the Neolithc Age, but they are now uninhabited due to the deforestation and erosion. The islands provide that perfect look back in time to the simple island life.

Dugi Otok

Located just off the Dalmatian coast close to Zadar, Dugi Otok is among the largest of the Croatian islands. Dug Otok translates to ‘long island’ as it is about 45 km long. This is a destination where you can relax and get off the beaten path. The magnificent island is known for its vineyards and orchards. There are a range of places to go such as Telascica Nature Park and Saharan beach. That particular beach is quite secluded and stunning, where you can enjoy crystal-clear waters surrounded by pine trees.

Solta

This little island is a popular day trip from Split, the vibrant town right on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast. Solta Island (pronounced sholta) with its beautiful landscape and olive groves gives a feeling of tranquility. The island has a collection of stone-house villages and impressive harbours. You can explore the entire island by cycling or walking. The largest village is called Stomorska, where you’ll find a range of great restaurants. For a sunny day at the beach, head to Moslinica cove on the western coast.

Galešnjak

Probably the most famous of all the Croatian islands because of its unmistakeable heart shape. Known as the lover's island, Galešnjak Island is privately owned but there are some local companies that arrange a tour on it.

Cres

Among the largest islands in Croatia, Cres Island is blessed with some of the greatest beaches and lagunas. Located in the northern part of the Kvarner gulf and stretching about 66 km in length, Cres Island contains a range of coves, bays, and pebbly beaches. The scenery is spectacular and try to catch a glimpse of the biggest bird in Europe, the griffen vulture. Cres Island is interesting for any traveller inspired by history and culture. The island has been inhabited since the stone age, so there are a few historical and cultural sites available ranging from ancient cities and remnants, early roman-catholic churches and chapels, Glagolitic engravings in stones, Venetian heritage buildings, and other modern monuments and sculptures to explore.

Hvar

Hvar is another beautiful island to learn about Croatian history. Don't miss the Franciscan Monastery of Our Lady of Grace and head to old town for a taste of the delicious local cuisine, freshly grilled sardines and succulent olives.
