France is the largest country in western Europe and one of the most famous travel destinations in the entire world. Despite its popularity, the iconic country is mostly undiscovered. When you think of a great holiday there, your mind immediately goes to Paris but know that France is not just defined by the city of lights. Some of the most charming and unique towns on Earth are spread across France waiting to be explored. Check out our picks for the best off-the-beaten-path destinations in France.
Rocamadour
This small medieval town is built right into a cliffside above the Alzou River. The town’s houses, roofs, and churches look like they are part of the rock itself, providing a one-of-a-kind skyline. The dramatic setting will truly take your breath away. There are a lot of monuments in Rocamadour to check out during your stay such as the Chapella Notre Dame, the basilica Saint-Sauveur, the Saint-Michel chapel, and the Palace of the Bishops or Palais des Eveques.
Dinan
Among the few towns in France that are walled, Dinan is another very interesting and exceptionally gorgeous town to visit. Located along the River Rance, there are many medieval buildings still standing today. The locals are very proud of their Breton heritage, so during the Fête des Remparts they dress up in medieval costumes and celebrate their town’s historical heritage.
Gordes
Easily recognized by its houses of white and gray stone built around the main village, Gordes has striking beauty and is starting to attract lots of visitors every year. Gordes stands on the edge of the plateau of Vaucluse and boasts architecture that is quite fascinating. The skyline is dominated by the town’s church and old castle with a panoramic view of the valley and the mountains of Luberon on the opposite side. The tiny streets are filled with charming old doorways, arcades, and walls of flat stone that are remarkably reserved. During the summer months, there are a range of concerts, festivals, and exhibitions to check out.
Etretat
Located in northwestern France in the Haute-Normandie region, Etretat is every adventurer’s dream. This small martitime village is known in France for its natural white cliffs overlooking the crystal blue waters, the perfect place to have a secluded holiday and admire the beauty of nature. While the site is lesser known as a travel destination (not for long), it is quite popular in aviation history. This village is the place where the plane The White Bird was last seen in 1927. The plane was piloted by WWI heroes Charles Nungesser and Francois Coli, who wanted to fly from Paris to New York. It is recorded in history as one of the greatest unexplained mysteries of aviation and the monument is still on Etretat today.
