Take a trip for the ages - Cappadocia

November 5, 2015

Located in the historic country of Turkey is the hidden gem Cappadocia. This legendary land is so encapsulating and beautiful that Alexander the Great once wanted it to himself. Fortunately, the people in ancient times had very innovative ways of defending themselves. This province has a beautiful climate, friendly residents and a rich history. Many of the ancient wonders still exist as remarkable tourist attractions, annually drawing thousands of visitors. If you enjoy excellent food and rich culture, you should consider spending at least a week in Cappadocia.

Derinkuyu Underground City

The underground city is one of the world's most amazing and well-preserved historic sites. This subterranean burg served as an emergency shelter against the threat of invading armies, with an entrance at each end. As many as 20,000 people could take shelter in the underground city and the entrances would be sealed by tremendous stone doors. This breath-taking attraction was built in a time when Roman and Greek forces were conquering all nearby lands, and it remains virtually unchanged.

Dining in Cappadocia

Cappadocia is home to several amazing restaurants that pay homage to the region's amazing history. Somine Restaurant serves traditional Mediterranean dishes such as pilaf and lamb, but they also serve pizza and pide (Turkish pizza). Good food is Somine's claim to fame, but the restaurant's best asset is the friendly staff and unique ambiance.

Seyyah is another excellent dining choice, and their food is prepared in a traditional stone oven. This is the way the people of Cappadocia prepared their food centuries ago, and Seyyah Han remains true to this tradition. Their menu consists of delicacies from the ancients, prepared in a traditional manner. Dishes like grilled lamb chops can satisfy virtually any palate, and vegetarians can enjoy a veggie kebob.

The Fairy Chimneys

When visiting Cappadocia, you can visit one of the worlds' most mysterious attractions, the Fairy Chimneys. Volcanic activity formed these incredible structures, and people from ancient times carved their homes here. The chimneys are now home to restaurants and other businesses, because they've stood the test of time. The fairy chimneys look like something from Lord of the Rings, and they must be seen to truly be appreciated. If you really want to spoil yourself, take slow hot air balloon ride over the amazing structures.

Ancient Destination: Modern Amenities

The Cappadocia Cave Suites Hotel is by far the most entertaining place to stay while on vacation. You'll have an awe-inspiring view of the fairy chimneys and access to a traditional bath & massage. There are also modern amenities such as a sauna and workout room. You'll probably do very little sleeping, because Cappadocia is such an interesting place, but it's nice to have the option of lodging in such a historically rich location.
